Food is a basic need in life. When in abundance, this is not felt. When in scarcity, that’s when we all understand the use of food. Many parts of the world, people are going without a meal and yet in other parts of the world, food is readily available. People on average need two meals plus breakfast a day. That is a myth in some parts of the World. In Uganda, the situation is quite the same, there are areas where people go without meals for days. Some can secure one meal a day and others can have only breakfast. On the contrary, there are people who have a lot to have and just don’t mind about the usage.

Ways of wastage

First of all, people prepare food not putting consumption in consideration. Food is prepared in excess and when they eat and can’t finish it, it’s thrown away. If there is any other option, it’s kept for the next meal. Preservation is either by keeping in saucepans or fridge. The second form of wastage is at breakfast time. People have multiple selection for breakfast. Ranging from bread, fried eggs, steamed maize, samosa, spaghetti, nuts and sometimes food is cooked for breakfast. One finds himself with a task to eat from most of these selections. This in the end leads to eating things halfway. Meaning they have to be thrown away. The third form of wastage happens in the fridge. Shopping is done and stored in the fridge. This comprises of perishables. Milk, fruits, cooked food. Will talk about sliced fruits. Families can cut a water melon and eat half and leave the rest in there until a time when it gets spoilt. This happens to all foods and liquids that have been used and returned to the fridge for preservation. Apples, bananas, milk, juice, salad etc. lastly the purchase of what shall be used once in a while. Nido, cornflakes, Irish, etc. people do purchase some of these foods as something they are to have once in a while. The result is wastage. The foods go bad. Start to rot and have to be thrown away.
